Tongue & Lip Tie Assessment
A functional assessment for babies, children, and teens, looking at feeding, speech, sleep, and how the tongue actually moves.
A tongue tie or lip tie is a band of tissue that limits how far the tongue or upper lip can move. Not every tie causes a problem. Our assessment looks at what your child's tongue and lips can actually do, so you get a clear answer on whether a tie is affecting feeding, speech, sleep, or eating, and whether anything needs doing.
Dr. Dan Truong starts with your history: feeding, latch, speech, sleep, and what other providers have already found. Then he looks at how the tongue lifts, extends, and moves side to side, how the lips seal, and, for babies, how they suck and latch. For older children and teens, he also looks at speech sounds, chewing, swallowing, and signs of mouth breathing or restless sleep. You hear what he found and what it means before you leave.
A straight answer saves families months of uncertainty. If a tie is limiting function, you get a plan that may include a release and support from other providers. If it is not, you hear that plainly too, and no one releases a tie that does not need it.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about tongue & lip tie assessment.
Painful or shallow latching, clicking while feeding, milk leaking from the mouth, long or frequent feeds, poor weight gain, gassiness, and nipple pain or damage for a nursing parent. Bottle-fed babies can show similar struggles with the bottle.
Trouble with certain speech sounds, picky or slow eating, gagging on textures, mouth breathing, snoring or restless sleep, difficulty licking the lips or moving food around the mouth, and a gap between the front teeth from a tight lip tie.
No. We assess children and teens too. Ties are often found later, when speech, eating, or sleep concerns come up, and a release can still help when a tie is limiting function.
No. Many ties do not limit function and need nothing. Assessment always comes before any recommendation, and you will hear plainly when the answer is that nothing needs doing.
Yes. Depending on your child, we coordinate with lactation consultants, myofunctional therapists, speech therapists, chiropractors, and bodyworkers before and after a release. Tell us who is already involved and we will work alongside them.
