Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

A painless liquid brushed onto a cavity to help stop it from growing, with no drilling and no shots. It permanently stains the decay black.

Silver diamine fluoride, or SDF, is a liquid that is brushed onto a cavity to help stop the decay from growing. We use Advantage Arrest. There is no drilling, no numbing, and no shots. One important thing to know up front: SDF permanently stains the treated decay black.

The tooth is dried, and a tiny amount of SDF is painted onto the cavity with a small brush. It takes a minute or two and does not hurt. Dr. Dan Truong will tell you whether a repeat application is needed at a later visit, and checks the treated teeth at each appointment.

SDF can slow or stop a cavity without a drill, which makes it useful for very young children, anxious children, and children with several cavities at once. It can also buy time, keeping decay in check until your child is ready for a filling or crown, or until treatment under general anesthesia is scheduled.
